Not to get too mushy on you, but its almost Valentine's Day so... we sure do love you all! You (literally and figuratively) light our [ecologically appropriate, resilience increasing, hazard reducing, landscape health promoting] fires year round!

We're excited to share with you all the new science publications out this month, plus an extensive lineup of upcoming webinars and other learning opportunities. We also have a new research brief to share on westside stream responses to the 2020 Labor Day fires in Oregon, an introduction to another new member of our team, and an update on the FASMEE project. Read on for all the flaming-hot-with-valentine's-hearts-details. As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, resources to highlight in future newsletters, or other news to share; we are always happy to hear from you!

Fire Effects on Stream Ecosystem Responses in Western Oregon Watersheds

Learn about the diverse impacts the 2020 Labor Day fires in Oregon had on aquatic and riparian conditions in western Oregon, and how the impacts varied across fire severities and landscapes.

--> Meet the team: Vita Wright, Pacific Northwest Research Station Welcome to the NWFSC team Vita!  FSEN annual meeting in Kansas, 2023.  For the past two funding cycles, Becky Kerns, Research Ecologist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station (PNWRS), has served as the NWFSC Principal Investigator. Becky has handed over the reins in order to focus more fully on her research. We appreciate Becky’s willingness to continue collaborating with the NWFSC as a member of the Steering Committee. Effective this funding cycle, Vita Wright is taking the lead as PNWRS Co-Principal Investigator. Vita comes to us from the Northern Rockies Fire Science Network, where she served for 12 years as Principal Investigator. As a Science Delivery Specialist with the PNWRS, Vita collaborates with the NWFSC, serves as a science liaison to the PNW Region’s Wildfire Crisis Team, works with the PNWRS Westside Fire Initiative, and collaborates with other Science Delivery Specialists from across the Forest Service to deliver Forest Service research, share best practices, and strategize on how to measure success. Vita received her PhD from the University of Montana, studying influences on research use by federal fire managers in the BLM, NPS, and USFS, and she continues to specialize in conducting needs assessments and the science of science integration. Vita is especially interested in building partnerships, serving tribes, and wilderness fire.

The NWFSC also appreciates strong PNWRS collaboration through steering committee members Becky Kerns, Aurora Lehr and Adam Watts, and Partner Sensing Group members Liz Dent and Jessica Halofsky. We will continue to highlight individual team members in forthcoming newsletters. Meet the team! --> Conferences, workshops, and trainings:

Fire and Smoke Evaluation Experiment publications
NWFSC, along with several other western exchanges, are partners on outreach and communication around the FASMEE (Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment) project, which is led by PI and NWFSC Steering Committee member Adam Watts. In October, the project collected measurements from a (very rare) stand-replacing prescribed fire on the Fishlake National Forest. There will be another burn in the same place this fall. Recent publications and updates on this project include: Learn more about the project.  --> In the News:
