Reports: --> Meet the team! Mike Coughlan, University of Oregon Ecosystem Workforce Program

Michael Coughlan is a NWFSC steering committee member and has been contributing to NWFSC efforts for many years. He is assistant research professor and associate director of the Ecosystem Workforce Program at the University of Oregon. An environmental anthropologist by training, his research focuses on socio-ecological dynamics of wildfire, past and present with specific interests in how human institutions mediate both positive and negative relationships between people, fire, and landscapes. Coughlan has specific interests in conducting applied research and in translating relevant science to practitioners and managers to apply to real world problems. Coughlan has authored and co-authored science syntheses for the NWFSC since 2019 covering topics such as social vulnerability and Indigenous fire stewardship. He is currently leading projects in Oregon and the PNW broadly that directly relate to NWFSC focal areas of landscape resilience, Westside wildfire, and wildfire smoke. We are so glad to have Mike on our team, and greatly appreciate the perspectives, scholarship, and engagement he brings to our team!

We will continue to highlight all our team members in forthcoming newsletters. Meet the team! --> Conferences, workshops, and trainings:

Teaser and upcoming feature video! NWFSC, along with several other western exchanges, are partners on outreach and communication around the FASMEE (Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment) project, which is led by PI and NWFSC Steering Committee member Adam Watts. In October, the project collected measurements from a (very rare) stand-replacing prescribed fire on the Fishlake National Forest. Along with the Great Basin Fire Science Exchange, NWFSC is helping to create a video of the Monroe Mountain burn with the help of NWFSC's FASMEE liaison Vita Wright. We are excited to release the trailer for the upcoming feature video, which will be out soon, so stay tuned!
